Mat 24:12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.
As someone who grew up in a church, I’ve personally watched as an overwhelming number of my generation have drifted away from their faith. There was a time when it struck me as a puzzle as to why you would leave something so real, but then I got older. It was only recently I began to realize what I believe is one of the key reasons many people, especially young people leave the faith – the abundance of iniquity.
What is this iniquity? By definition, it means simply, without law. Lawless. The words of Jesus themself give a clue to what constitutes iniquity – the result of having iniquity present in ones’ life will lead to their love for Christ to become cold.
There are many things that can fall under the umbrella of iniquity. I do not wish to raise any of them, but rather highlight how virtually anything can become iniquity – the first and greatest commandment of all is to love the One Lord and God with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength. Anything that removes the ‘all’ of our loving towards God becomes iniquity.
In an age when there is so much screaming for our attention, be it people, media, entertainment, or addictive substances, it’s become a truly tough task to love God with ALL.
I venture to say this is one of the key reasons so many young people leave. It’s not a sudden decision. It’s a gradual cooling as more and more things take priority over loving God, until one day, He’s so far down the list He never gets anytime.
It’s not that they stopped loving God, it’s that other things became more important.
This is where perhaps it’s good to understand that love will bring suffering. Because anything you love will at some stage or another demand sacrifice. It will cost. To what lengths will you go to protect your love for Christ? How long a war will you wage? How bloody will the fight be? These questions are things you must settle or else, you will lose Christ – and nothing can make up for that.
